Often referred to as a "punk super group" due to the credentials of their individual members Me First And The Gimme Gimmes have to be hands down the most popular punk band who never wrote a single original song together. While their popularity is apparent, their behind the scenes information isn't necessarily as clear, so when I recently had a chance to speak with guitarist Jake Jackson (aka Chris Shiflett of the Foo Fighters) you can bet I jumped at it! Here's what Chris had to say.
Q: When the band started it was essentially Spikes project. Is that still the case today or has it become more of a "band" situation?
A: It will always be Spike's project. He's the boss and we defer to him.
Q: The bands line up has always varied, why is that and what is the current line up?
A: Actually, the bands line-up has always been exactly the same. We are STILL Fatty on bass, Spike on vocals, Joey on guitar, Dave on drums, and myself, Jackson, on guitar too.
Q: How did you get introduced into the line up?
A: They won me in a raffle.
Q: How do you feel about that band sometimes being regarded as a punk "super group" because of the individual members backgrounds?
A: It's great! We're super and we're a group: We're a supergroup! What exactly are we super at?
Q: Which members will be on this years 2001 Warped Tour?
A: That remains to be seen. I'll probably be busy for most of the summer making a new record.
Q: The Warped Tour is the first big ticket tour the band has done isn't it? If so, why the decision to do it this year?
A: It's the first tour we've ever done, period. We don't get out much.
Q: Me First And The Gimme Gimmes haven't really toured that much so a lot of fans have never actually seen you guys play collectively. What's a MFAGG show like?
A: It's usually a big disappointment but we have a really good time. Don't expect much and you won't be as let down.
Q: Does the busy schedule of the members ever become a problem?
A: It hasn't yet cuz we only get together a couple of times a year. Who knows now, cuz this is gonna be the year of the Gimme Gimme.
Q: How often are you guys actually together as a band?
A: Not often.
Q: When it comes to covering other people material have you ever come across anything you just couldn't do? Is there anything that's off limits to the band?
A: Absolutely. There were lots of show tunes that we just couldn't work out. They were too hard for us cuz we're not very bright. We'll never do an album of punk rock covers (unless of course we didn't do it in a punk rock kinda groove).
Q: Your decision to leave No Use For A Name for the Foo Fighters was kind of a surprise to some people, can you tell us a bit about that decision?
A: I've loved the Foo Fighters for as long as they've been a band so for me it was a very natural thing to do. I didn't think there was anything surprising about it.
Q: MFAGG and the Foo Fighters are two drastically different types of bands, what do the guys in the Foo Fighters think of your side project?
A: I don't even think any of them have ever heard us so I'm not sure.
Q: What are each of your bands up to now, and what can fans look forward to in 2001?
A: I can't speak for the other guys but we're getting ready to make a new Foo's record this summer and then hit the road again.
Q: Any chance of a MFAGG / Foo Fighters tour?
A: No, but we almost had the Gimmes open up for the Foo's in Chicago a little while back. It'd be fun but it didn't work out.
Q: Any closing remarks?
A: Gimme Gimmes forever.
