| Shifty and No Use
Drummer Rory Koff talks about how Chris ended up in No Use
|
As for new members, did you know these guys beforehand, or you had to audition? Rory: The whole thing with Chris (Chris Shiflett) was a total fluke. Our old guitar player was a diabetic, and he couldn't tour the kind of schedule we were doing, and he almost died on tour twice. It was totally knarly, and he was like "I can't do this again", and we were like "shit!"...and three days before we were going on our biggest tour, he quit. We asked Fat Mike if he knew anybody that can play guitar, or anything really. He asked around while at the office, and took one hand on the phone and asked "hey, does anybody know how to play guitar? Cause No Use For A Name needs a guitar player...". Chris had just got a job there like a week before, and he didn't want to blow his chances working at Fat Wreck Chords, cause he just got a job with them from Santa Barbara. And moved out to San Francisco...and said he could play a little guitar, and they asked him if he wanted to play guitar for No Use For A Name. He was like "I don't want to lose my job", and Fat Mike was like "I just need a guitar player for No Use". So he comes over the next day, with me and Tony, picked up the guitar, and it worked out. We said "you're hired, do you wanna play?", he said "yeah...how long are you guys going on tour for?", we're like "2 months"...and he said "I might lose my job"...so we called up Fat and Mike was like "I don't care, they need a guitar player". Chris is an outstanding guitar player, one of the best punk guitar players in the business. I'm not just saying that cause I'm in the band with him, he is. So we pretty much stole him away from Fat Mike's distribution record company. He's really funny, and a great guitar player. And before No Use For A Name, you were in other bands, like Boneshavers, and Noisy Neighbors? Rory: Yeah...Tony played in a band called Anxiety, and Chris played in a band called Green Thumb, and Matt played with face to face. I did two albums with another band, Tony did an album, Chris did an album, so we all have been doing stuff. And I've been doing this stuff for a long time, this is pretty much the only band I've played with.
