The star relaxed after the band's weekend V Festival performance by stepping into the ring with former ABA welterweight champion MICHAEL LOMAX in East London yesterday. A pal said: "Boxing is a good way to come down after a big gig." He'll probably now need a week's sleep to recover. November 19, 1999 Music: FOO FIGHTERS - For a Foo dollars more RICHARD WALLACE The Foos hit town on the back of their third, and most accessible album, There Is Nothing Left To Lose, as part of an exhaustive global trek. Mainman Dave Grohl, formerly of grunge gods Nirvana, reckons the fact they recorded the new collection while out of contract meant there was no pressure from the men-in-suits. "I did the record sitting on the couch I've had for eight years and it was the most comfortable environment you could ask for," he says. "There wasn't anyone around telling us, 'This should be the single'." The Foo Fighters have had a rotating cast since their inception. Original drummer William Goldsmith left in March 1997 while guitarist Pat Smear announced he was leaving during the 1997 MTV Music Video Awards. The current tour will give us a first glimpse of new guitarist Chris Shiflett after the departure of Franz Stahl in June. "We held open auditions for 35 people," says Grohl. "Chris was the best guitarist and best singer out of the whole lot, plus he seemed so genuinely excited and fitted in with the rest of us so well. Hopefully, he'll be able to earn his promotion to full-time band member." | |||
