Why Drummers Use Tape?

The idea behind using tape is to have the effect of an ‘E-ring’ (Evans brand).  It is supposed to suppress some of the overtones of the drum.  The real question is, how well does it actually work? drum pad workouts Surprisingly, not well!  …At least not in my experience.  When you put tape on the drum it may dampen the overtones or “ring” a little bit, but you have to really use a ton of tape to make a serious difference.  The reason is that when the tape adheres to the head, it essentially becomes part of the head.  It acts like an extra coating and still vibrates with the overtones of the drum.  You really have to use a ton of tape to make a dent in the sound.  But, what it does do, pretty instantly, is make the drum feel worse to play on. drum speed

I once played in a club date band where the bandleader insisted on taping up the drums.  I generally hate this as a player.  Not only do I not like being told how to tune my own drums, but I was shocked to come into a showcase, after setting up earlier, to find that this bandleader had actually taken it upon himself to cover every inch of my drum heads in duct tape.  Needless to say I was not happy!  There was a little screaming and a lot of peeling!  After I had it out with him, I finally got my way… But you’d be surprised how common this is! drum speed exercises
